Mac OS Sierra Compatibility

Post by MilitaryMan » Fri Sep 02, 2016 11:22 am

I'm running Pyware 3D 8. What is the compatibility situation looking like for Macs upgrading to MacOS Sierra this fall?

Currently you will need to have 8.0.6 or greater to be compatible with the MacOS Sierra changes.

Over at MacRumors, they did get the old MRJ package to at least install. I'm not entirely sure about RUNNING correctly, but it can be installed. The issue becomes whether or not it will be recognized when the old versions of Pyware make the exact system call for the MRJ Java package.

Officially, anything from Pyware 8.0.0 on down will be considered unsupported under macOS Sierra, because there's simply no guarantee anymore when it comes to the quite specific system call those versions make. So you're using it at your own risk. This is why Dustin is saying to use 8.0.6 or better for full support, because it uses the current Java supplied by Oracle.

However, Sierra fixes a bunch of other issues, including a severe issue with how Dropbox installs. It abuses its request for accessibility frameworks under OS X that Sierra will patch. So obviously, the update is a necessity if you're using Dropbox.

All in all, your mileage is going to vary tremendously when it comes to using the new macOS. We'll all be treading somewhat carefully Tuesday.

UPDATE

Older versions will run if you install the old MRJ Java. This is 100% unsupported, though, both by Pyware and by Apple. So go into Sierra knowing that you're unsupported.
